2012 and the End of the World

Magnetic Pole Reversal

Magnetic pole reversal is exactly what it sounds like, but not nearly as scary as it sounds. The magnetic poles of the Earth are known to shift every few hundred thousand years. 2012 doomsayers claim that a magnetic pole reversal is coming this year (2012) and that it will have catastrophic consequences. Astrobiologist David Morrison with NASA states that there is no evidence a magnetic pole reversal is happening any time soon and that it would not be a concern if it did. Magnetic pole reversals would be wiping out all living things on Earth every 400,000 years if that is what they do, which it is not.

Lining up of the Planets Along the “Galactic Equator”

A few things about this doomsday prophesy are just ridiculous, according to experts. The so-called “Galactic Equator” is just a point in space. It is not an energy source or anything to worry about really. It is just a name for a spot. Now, there is a black hole in the Milky Way galaxy that has proponents of this theory worried. However, it has been there for a long time and is very far away. It cannot hurt the Earth just because the planets line up. That brings us to the best part. There is no planetary alignment taking place in 2012.

While it is always prudent to be prepared for emergencies, it looks like people do not have to prepare for the apocalypse just yet. The unfortunate truth is that people have been predicting doom and gloom for thousands of years. The world has been ending since humankind knew there was a world. It gets people scared, sells movies, gives pseudoscientists something to talk about and then goes away until the embarrassment of a failed prediction wears off. Yes, the world is going to end some day. Even if it does end this year, it does not make any of these predictions correct. Those in positions to know say it is highly unlikely anyway.
