Did David Lang mysteriously vanish in 1880?

On September 23, 1880, on a farm near Gallatin, Tennessee, David Lang was walking across the fields of his farm. Lang’s wife and children were watching him from the house. Suddenly, in the view of everyone, Lang vanished in mid-step. One moment he was walking and the next moment he was gone.

Home quickly set himself apart from the manner and methods of contemporary mediums. His séances generally took place in daytime or in brightly lit rooms at night. His demonstrations seemed fool-proof: a table with five men sitting on it moved around the room, and séances were never held in Home’s own lodgings. Most of the observers of his séances left believing Home’s gifts to be genuine.

The bodies were found by a pair of teenagers out for a stroll on the evening of September 16, 1922. They notified the police, who quickly descended on the scene. The officers found that the
man had been shot once in the head and the woman had been shot three times in the head.

Belle married in 1884 in Chicago, and the marriage produced at least two children (most, if not all, of her children were adopted). Two of her children died young from symptoms that indicated colitis. Belle collected on their life insurance. In 1900, her husband died. One doctor suspected poisoning, but the family doctor gave the official cause of death as heart failure.
