The Sleeping Prophet

Known as the Sleeping Prophet, Edgar Cayce was arguably America’s most well known psychic and holistic healer.
Born on 18 March 1877 in Hopkinsville, KY, Cayce would learn his many unique abilities at the early age of seven. After having considerable difficulty in school learning the words for his spelling homework, Cayce had a vision telling him that sleeping would help him learn. Cayce followed this advice and fell asleep. After he awoke a short time later, he was able to spell every word.
At the age of 15, Cayce was seriously hurt when he was hit on the neck with a baseball. While still somewhat out of his senses, he requested his parents prepare a strange concoction to place between his neck and head. His parents, in an attempt to humor their son, did as he asked. Cayce was completely recovered the following day.
When Cayce was 21, he developed a throat problem that prevented him from speaking. None of his doctors were able to help his condition. The possibility of this being a permanent illness weighed heavily on his mind. Without further options, Cayce recalled his ability to solve problems while in a sleep or trance like state and wanted to see if it could work again. He hired a hypnotist, Al Layne, who agreed to try it out. Once Cayce entered into a trance, he verbally described his symptoms and stated his voice box was not receiving the proper blood flow due to psychological paralysis. Still in a trance, it was observed that Cayce’s chest, throat and head became bright red. He then declared the treatment as being over, and once Cayce awoke, he was able to talk normally.
What is interesting about Edgar Cayce is that he was not a well educated man. Completing only a 9th grade education, Cayce was considered a simple, religious man but a voracious reader. However, when Cayce was in a trance, he would speak clearly, concisely and display a great depth of knowledge on every subject. While in a trance, Cayce would state “We” instead of “I” when he was referring to himself. And when the readings would begin, he would start by saying “We have the body”. It is reported that Cayce could speak 24 foreign languages during his trance. During readings he would identify medicines that were not readily known to the general public or have not been used for a very long time.
Cayce was persuaded to help others with his gift of healing by providing readings to the general public. Cayce agreed as long as he would not be profiting from this service. In all, Cayce gave 14,879 readings and provided these readings to well over 6,000 people. Most readings involved medical issues and many individuals claimed to be healed by his recommendations. Cayce’s fame would soon skyrocket and a 1943 article on him was titled “Miracle Man of Virginia Beach”. Through his readings, Cayce would also provide insight into a variety of subjects such as Atlantis, ancient Egypt, reincarnation and prophetic doomsday events.
Some events that experts credit Cayce in foretelling are the following:
- Cayce predicted the beginning and ending of both World Wars.
- In 1927, Cayce predicted a diagnostic of a blood drop would one day be possible. This was considered science fiction at the time.
- Cayce correctly predicted the stock market crash of 1927 and the end of the depression in 1933.
- In 1935, Cayce predicted Austria joining Germany and later, the Japanese in a coming war.
- In 1939, Cayce predicted 2 Presidents would die while still in office. This occurred with FDR and JFK.
- Edgar Cayce was not always correct in all his predictions. And some of his predictions have yet to be realized.
Some events that Cayce predicted that did not or has yet to occur:
- In 1944, Cayce predicted China would one day become the cradle of Christian civilization.
- Cayce predicted the Soviet Union would become the world symbol for freedom and hope.
- Cayce predicted a possible war over the development of a world currency.
- Cayce predicted Atlantis will rise again in 1968 or 1969.
- Cayce predicted by the year 2001, the Earths rotational axis would have shifted, causing global catastrophes. Japan would submerge, parts of California would break away from the continent and Georgia and New England would disappear.
- Cayce claimed the pyramids of Giza were built in 10,500 B.C. Carbon dated showed they were built between 3800-2850 B.C.
On 1 January 1945, Edgar Cayce made his final prediction. Cayce predicted he would be buried on 5 January. On 3 January 1945, at the age of 67, Edgar Cayce died in Virginia Beach, VA. He was buried on 5 January 1945.
