Hoia Baciu Forest, located in Romania, is notorious for its mysterious and eerie legends. This enchanted forest has captivated people’s imagination for centuries.
It is said to be haunted by strange occurrences and supernatural phenomena, making it a hotspot for paranormal enthusiasts and thrill-seekers. The forest boasts a rich history of unexplained sightings and inexplicable happenings.
Many visitors claim to have witnessed apparitions, and strange lights and even lost time while exploring this enigmatic woodland. These bizarre stories have given rise to the belief that Hoia Baciu Forest is a gateway to another realm, where ghosts and otherworldly beings reside.
The forest itself is found west of the city of Cluj-Napoca near the open-air section of the Museum of Transylvania: we are definitely in vampire country here. Not that anyone is letting that spoilt their enjoyment of the scenery: in more recent times it has been used as an area of recreation and leisure.
The forest can still be forbidding, however. It covers around a square mile (3 square kilometers) to the south of the Nadas river. The world has built up around it but parts of the forest still seem to shy away from modernity.
As well as having a quite mysterious past, there is some real history in this area also. One of the oldest Neolithic settlements to be found in Romania is believed to be nearby and is estimated to have been in use around 6,500 BC.

The culture that lived there has been named the Starcevo-Koros-Cris and they were discovered in tombs and houses in the 1960s throughout the rest of the century. However, despite this, the forest is much more remembered for its dark and supernatural legends.
Famous Legends of the Forest
One of the most intriguing stories surrounding the Hoia Baciu Forest is the Shepherd Story. According to local legends, a shepherd once entered the forest with his flock of sheep and mysteriously disappeared. He and his sheep were never seen again, and his fate remains a mystery to this day.
This eerie tale has only added to the forest’s reputation as a hotspot for dark and paranormal tourism. The Shepherd Story has captured the imagination of visitors who come to explore the forest in search of answers and to experience the unsettling atmosphere firsthand.
Another legend associated with the Hoia Baciu Forest is the UFO sightings. It has become a popular destination for UFO enthusiasts due to numerous reported close encounters.
These alleged encounters with unidentified flying objects have added another layer of intrigue to the forest’s reputation. Visitors who are interested in the paranormal or extraterrestrial phenomena often flock to the Hoia Baciu Forest in hopes of witnessing their own encounter with a UFO.
The stories and legends surrounding these sightings further add to the allure of this mystical place, drawing in both believers and skeptics alike. This all stems from the UFO Sighting in 1968, where a military technician named Emil Barnea captured a photo of a saucer-shaped object over the forest. This photo, along with numerous other reports of strange lights and unexplained phenomena, has led some to dub Hoia Baciu as the “Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania”.
But worse lies in the deepest parts of the forest, and here can be found The Clearing, one of the most fascinating aspects of Hoai Baciu. Legends claim that no trees or plants are able to grow in the area, and it remains a blasted landscape where nothing living can survive.
If you don’t believe us, check it out: it is easy to find in the forest as an unpaved road goes right through it. The area is called the Poiana Rotunda and is a mostly round clearing of around 2,000 square meters (21,500 square feet) near the southwestern corner.
Unfortunately, this legend seems to have been exaggerated by the storytellers as many people who go there today claim that rather than being completely devoid of vegetation there is a thick lush green meadow filled with flowers. However, it is claimed that this is the area where the previously mentioned UFO landed. Others claim that the area is filled with radiation but there is little proof for this.
The red lights are another paranormal activity attributed to the forest. There are descriptions of them across the vast forest. Many claim to have seen them but again there has been no proof of it. The closes that anyone has gotten so far is a program from 2014 called Ghost Adventures.
They had been situated at the clearing where no activity emerged and so continued to push through the forest when they saw a red light in the distance. The footage released from this episode, however, is not of great quality. The people recording are sure though that the light was stationary, and it was within the forest.
According to locals, the most popular legend revolves around a young girl who was left alone in the forest at age 5. Many people looked for her but to no avail. Five years later, however, the same girl emerged, completely clean and wearing the same clothes but with no memory of the time passing.
Some legends claim that she returned with a darker skin tone. But few references have been provided for the story in general. This story seems to be the most repeated, but it is not always a little girl. Despite this, there is little evidence of any stories in the media that have made it to today.
Not Actually That Dangerous
As previously mentioned, many stories have attracted paranormal explorers and thrill seekers. Each will tell of the time that something happened to them. The locals, however, utilize the space as any town would. A recreational and relaxing area. However, in order to prove that it is safe, people will have to go there themselves at camp through the night, if they are brave enough.
