History is full of intriguing mysteries, puzzles that can take centuries to solve, if they’re ever solved at all. And with the Copiale Cipher, we have an especially interesting situation..
For over two centuries, this cryptic script lay dormant, holding its secrets close and confounding all attempts to unveil its message. Its mere existence raised a myriad of tantalizing questions. Who wrote it? How did they create a cipher that the best modern codebreakers couldn’t solve?
But, in 2011, the cipher was finally broken, giving us an opportunity to hold up centuries of speculation against the actual answer. Let’s just say when the cipher was finally broken, no one was expecting what happened next.
What is the Copiale Cipher and Who Created It?
At the heart of our journey lies the Copiale Cipher, a cryptic manuscript that tantalized historians and codebreakers alike. Crafted in the 18th century, the cipher is a curious blend of handwritten symbols and characters.
There are around 750,000 of these symbols in total, each meticulously inked onto parchment covering 105 pages. All are bound into a single, massive volume.
The cipher went undeciphered for over 260 years. Its strange mixture of abstract symbols, Greek, and Roman letters stumped scientists and code breakers for decades. But who was the mastermind behind this intricate web of secrecy?
Unveiling the true identity of the creator was also no small feat. The origins of the Copiale Cipher were shrouded in uncertainty until recent breakthroughs in historical research and linguistic analysis shed light on its enigmatic birth. It was revealed that the cipher’s birth can be attributed to a secretive secret society from Germany, reflecting the fascination of its time with hidden knowledge and esoteric rituals.

The meticulous crafting of the cipher raises questions about the purpose behind its creation. Was it a means of protecting sensitive information from prying eyes? Or was it perhaps an intellectual exercise intended to challenge the brightest minds of the era? The only way to answer these questions was to decipher it.
What Was It Rumored to Contain?
If someone goes to the effort to secure something we presume they have something valuable they’re trying to protect. An unlocked door suggests it hides little of worth; a padlocked door indicates something of some value.
A vault door? Well, that means big bucks. To codebreakers, the Copiale Cipher was a big, shiny vault door.
So of course, over the centuries there was a lot of speculation as to the cipher’s contents. There was a plethora of rumors, ranging from the mundane to the fantastical. Some whispered that it concealed maps to hidden treasures, while others speculated it held the secrets to lost languages or forbidden knowledge.
However, the most prevalent theory centered around its connection to secret societies and coded rituals. Some suggested it might unveil the inner workings of the society that birthed it – a key to understanding their beliefs, goals, and initiation rites. The aura of secrecy surrounding secret societies of that era only fueled the allure of this theory, as it seemed to be the perfect conduit for the Copiale Cipher’s hidden messages. Could it be Templars? Masons? A group of dark occultists?
Cracking the Code
The elusive Copiale Cipher’s long-standing resistance to decryption finally met its match in the form of a collaborative effort between linguists and computer scientists. After years of fruitless attempts by human cryptographers, the code’s impenetrable barrier began to crumble thanks to a multidisciplinary team’s tenacity.
Dr. Kevin Knight, a computer scientist, and Dr. Beáta Megyesi, a linguist, spearheaded the breakthrough. Armed with a digital library of over 500 languages and their corresponding frequency databases, they embarked on a journey of analysis and pattern recognition. Their approach involved an ingenious combination of automated techniques and good old-fashioned linguistic intuition.
By identifying repeated symbols, analyzing their frequency, and cross-referencing them with the languages in their database, Knight and Megyesi managed to link certain symbols to common German words. As the code slowly surrendered its secrets, the researchers revealed a message that had long been shrouded in mystery.

As the layers of the Copiale Cipher were peeled away, revealing the hidden text within, the question that had echoed through time was finally answered: what did the cipher ultimately contain?
Contrary to the wild speculations that had surrounded its content, the decrypted message was both intriguing and unexpectedly mundane. It was a detailed account of the rituals and ceremonies of the secret society that had devised the cipher. The manuscript unveiled the inner workings of their initiation rites, organizational structure, and the philosophical underpinnings that guided their actions.
Who was this secret society? Well, this is where things get really strange. Known as the Oculists, they were a group of ophthalmologists (eye doctors), led by Count Friedrich August von Veltheim. It’s believed that they were likely all Freemasons who had set up a new society to pass on Masonic rites after that group had been banned by Pope Clement XII. This would explain why someone had gone to such lengths to code the document.
The first 16 pages of the document cover a particularly odd Oculist initiation ceremony. It lays out how potential members were asked to read a blank piece of paper. When they admitted they couldn’t do it, they were given glasses and asked to try again. Still unable to do so, they washed their eyes with a cloth before having a ceremonial “operation” during which one eyebrow hair was plucked.
Not what anyone working on the decryption had imagined, that’s for sure.
Secrets Worth Keeping
The Copiale Cipher, after 260 years of silence, finally surrendered its mysteries to a persistent blend of human intellect and technological prowess. Its journey from obscurity to revelation embodies the ceaseless quest to unveil history’s concealed narratives.
While not the repository of fantastic secrets some had imagined, the cipher’s decoded message unveiled a different kind of treasure, a glimpse into the past that offers insight into the hidden corners of human society. The Copiale Cipher stands as a reminder that, with dedication and collaboration, even the most cryptic of enigmas can be unraveled, connecting us intimately with our past. Even more importantly it teaches us that even optometrists have their secrets.
