For over two centuries, this cryptic script lay dormant, holding its secrets close and confounding all attempts to unveil its message. Its mere existence raised a myriad of tantalizing questions. Who wrote it? How did they create a cipher that the best modern codebreakers couldn’t solve?

However, the most prevalent theory centered around its connection to secret societies and coded rituals. Some suggested it might unveil the inner workings of the society that birthed it – a key to understanding their beliefs, goals, and initiation rites. The aura of secrecy surrounding secret societies of that era only fueled the allure of this theory, as it seemed to be the perfect conduit for the Copiale Cipher’s hidden messages. Could it be Templars? Masons? A group of dark occultists?
Cracking the Code
The elusive Copiale Cipher’s long-standing resistance to decryption finally met its match in the form of a collaborative effort between linguists and computer scientists. Contrary to the wild speculations that had surrounded its content, the decrypted message was both intriguing and unexpectedly mundane. It was a detailed account of the rituals and ceremonies of the secret society that had devised the cipher. Who was this secret society? Well, this is where things get really strange. Known as the Oculists, they were a group of ophthalmologists (eye doctors), led by Count Friedrich August von Veltheim. It’s believed that they were likely all Freemasons who had set up a new society to pass on Masonic rites after that group had been banned by Pope Clement XII. This would explain why someone had gone to such lengths to code the document.
The first 16 pages of the document cover a particularly odd Oculist initiation ceremony. It lays out how potential members were asked to read a blank piece of paper. When they admitted they couldn’t do it, they were given glasses and asked to try again. Still unable to do so, they washed their eyes with a cloth before having a ceremonial “operation” during which one eyebrow hair was plucked.
Not what anyone working on the decryption had imagined, that’s for sure.
