My name is Paula Gruber. I am 79 years old. My father Johann Gruber, originally from Nuremberg, was a staunch Bavarian Catholic. My mother’s name was Constancia. She was a “Chardo” (Catholic Kshatriya) or Goan of Indo-Portuguese descent who migrated to Lisbon in 1930 where she met my father. I was born in Lisbon. We traveled to Munich before the war and my father taught in a few schools in Germany before returning to Lisbon again. He spoke fluent Portuguese as well as German. His English was also commendable and he worked under an assumed name along with a well-known spy named Joan Pujol Garcia translating German communication for the allies. As a little girl I lived in Lisbon and later in Munich for most of my life after the war. My father died young, in his mid-50s, shortly after the war in 1948. I lost my mother in 1972.
