Human history has produced an extraordinary outpouring of expression and creativity, from the magical cave paintings of Lascaux in France to the stark and strange explorations of Picasso and Dali. Such works of art have, in the main, been preserved carefully for the enjoyment of future generations.
Sadly, though, such items are also extremely valuable, and over the years many have been stolen, lost from the public eye. With thefts such as the Isabella Gardner Museum heist in Boston, perhaps the most significant loss of art in history (certainly from a monetary perspective), many priceless artifacts have been lost to us.
Here are ten of the most valuable and irreplaceable works of art which have been stolen and never recovered.
1. The Concert by Johannes Vermeer
2. The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt
3. The View of Auvers sur Oise by Cezanne
4. Poppy Flowers by Vincent van Gogh
5. Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence by Caravaggio
6. Le pigeon aux petits pois by Pablo Picasso
7. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt
8. Portrait of a Young Man by Raphael
9. Girl in Front of Open Window by Paul Gauguin
10. The White Duck by Jean-Baptiste Oudry
(Bonus) The Portrait of the Duke of Wellington by Fracisco de Goya
